“Fans saved Star Trek back in the day and they sort of invented fandom and invented conventions, fan conventions so it seems poetic that we end up here on the 50th anniversary so to bring it straight to the fans who have given us our lives and our livelihood”, Cho said. When asked if the character would be killed off, Abrams replied, “I have thought about it, we’re working on it, and it’s too early to talk about it”.

During the interview, J.J. also said everyone knew the Star Trek Beyond shoot would “be a bit of a heartbreak” because of the death of actor Leonard Nimoy, who originally played the character of Spock in the 1960s TV series and reprised the role for two of the reboot films.

Following the moments silence, fireworks were set off as the Star Trek theme was blasted out by the orchestra. “I had to do loads of research and I think afterwards I realized what ‘Star Trek” meant, and I’m really proud to be a part of it, to be honest”.

The event took place on the preview night of Comic-Con and, for the first time, a movie was screened outdoors on an IMAX screen.

The crowd erupted with laughter and cheers at various moments during the threequel, including when Pine’s starship boss James T. Kirk pulls off a daring escape on a motorcycle and as John Cho’s helmsman Hikaru Sulu embraces his never-before-seen husband and daughter.

Yelchin, who played Chekov in three of the films in the new franchise, passed away last month after a freak automobile accident at his home in Studio City.

“There is something missing tonight”, Abrams said. “There is someone missing tonight”. Several “Trek” sessions are planned inside the San Diego Convention Center, including a Saturday panel featuring actors from each “Trek” installment, such as William Shatner, Michael Dorn and Jeri Ryan.
