‘Star Trek Beyond’ proves the odds have it
In Star Trek Beyond, the Enterprise crew explores the furthest reaches of uncharted space, where they encounter a mysterious new enemy who puts them and everything the Federation stands for to the test. Star Trek Beyond is featuring more of the unbelievable stars of the Hollywood industry Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto reprise their roles as Captain James T. Kirk and Commander Spock, with Pegg, Karl Urban, Zoe Saldana, John Cho and Anton Yelchin are chosen from the previously released films.

Lin replicates Abrams’s breakneck energy for a couple of elaborate set pieces, but he knows the story’s real pleasures lie in its middle movement, as our isolated heroes suss out their situations and work to find their friends. As the Enterprise nears its destination, a devastating attack forces it to break apart and crash onto a starkly handsome (and conveniently human-friendly M-Class) uncharted planet. Created by Gene Roddenberry, the franchise has thrived over the ensuing five decades with some tremendous high points and a few low ones but Star Trek Beyond proves that this series still can offer a few great surprises.
“Star Trek Beyond” hit theaters this week, celebrating the 50th anniversary of the sci-fi franchise.
Even more promising is the fact that both Chris Pine (Captain James T. Kirk) and Zachary Quinto (Commander Spock) signed onto a fourth movie more than a year ago. The lone female occupant of the craft is in need of help to rescue her crew that has been abducted by a fierce and ruthless warlord called Krall (Idris Elba).
“Star Trek Beyond” definitely appeals to fantasy and science fiction enthusiasts, but overall it’s still a solid action adventure film that other audiences can appreciate. Directed by Justin Lin from a screenplay by Pegg and Doug Jung. Zoe Saldana is his love interest, Uhura; John Cho is the pilot, Sulu; and Karl Urban is their doctor, Bones. And as rewarding as it is to see this material tricked out with the kind of space-bling that Roddenberry could afford in 1979’s moribund Star Trek: The Motion Picture and then never again, it’s always been clear that Star Trek’s eggheaded civilization-seeking imperatives are better served by television than by big-budget movies.
Unity is a key word in this film, used several times by crew members as they try to explain to Jayla that working together is for the best.
“It’s a pretty remarkable milestone for any entertainment franchise to last for half a century”, Zachary Quinto, who plays the half-Vulcan Mr. Spock in the rebooted films, observes.
As for characters, McCoy was a forgotten figure in “Star Trek Into Darkness”. As awesome as Elba is as Krall, the character’s motivations are a re-hash of something you’ve seen many times before.
The characters couldn’t be more lived-in, but their circumstances fail to take us into what should feel like new territory.

Their mission: to somehow find their way back to one another and kick (literally) plenty of alien butt along the way. The softer ballad tones are distracting through some of the more dramatic scenes and the intensity levels are never revved up in the same manner as the earlier installments.
