‘Star Trek Beyond’ takes box office out of this world

On Rotten Tomatoes, the Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto starring film now has an 83 percent rating from critics and an 86 percent rating from audiences. He told The Hollywood Reporter he would have preferred it if Star Trek Beyond had introduced a new character who was LGBT. It picked up $21 million, which may seem like just a touch off the pace of the previously mentioned films, but when compared to the franchise entries, its pretty dire. The result is a great showcase of acting and chemistry among the main cast of the movie, all of whom are now more than comfortable in their own uniforms and one of the main attractions of the new reboots.

“Star Trek Beyond” is the third film in the rebooted franchise that kicked off with J.J. Abrams” “Star Trek.’ This latest film opened $20 mn behind that 2009 release, but experts say the returns are still promising for Paramount.

It feels like Star Trek Beyond took everything that we loved about Star Trek, and yet still made it feel very original. It features the crew of the USS Enterprise into their exploration of an unexplored space.

The scale of threat in this sequel has been suitably ramped up – with a new baddie Krall (Idris “Luther” Elba) intent on mass extermination of human kind.

“I think Star Trek in general has been about individual rights and about respecting everyone, no matter who or what the are”, said Brett Spiner, who played the android Data in the Star Trek: The Next Generation television and film series. Parts of the website may not work as expected without them. Yeah, these new Star Trek films aren’t really good at making decent, non-one-dimensional villains. The thing is that the film feels like Star Trek, like what it is supposed to be, and the flawless way to celebrate the franchise’s 50 anniversary.

The Star Trek franchise shows no sign of slowing down and indeed is now giving the Star Wars films a run for their money. “A lot of our politicians and our fellow citizens could take a page from Star Trek and have a bit more respect for each other and for all of us”, he added. You know, like Star Trek IV had time travel in it. The film versions under J.J. Abrams carry a different timeline and universe.

To be sure, this weekend’s foreign opening represented only 45% of the new film’s global footprint, and Paramount still has openings in France, Spain, China and Japan to look forward to.
