Star Trek character won’t be recast
Trekkies rejoice! Set your pahsers to stunned as The Vue Cinema on Kirkstall Road is boldly going where no-one has gone before on Thursday evening – by showing a Star Trek triple bill. Though still a producer, J.J. Abrams handed the directing reins to Justin Lin (helmer of four of the “Fast and Furious” films) in what turns out to be a almost seamless stylistic transition.

The event starts at 6.45pm and ends at 1.54am. “It’s beyond devastating, so I just want people to see him tonight and be happy that he has been immortalized in some way”. We’ll print a selection on The Dispatch.
Anton Yelchin as Ensign Pavel Chekov in “Star Trek Beyond”.
“I think it was very important to honour Leonard’s legacy in this film and it was very important for me personally that we found a way to include it in the story”, he said.
Yelchin passed away in a auto crash in southern California’s San Fernando Valley on June 19.
Abrams told The Toronto Sun “there’s no replacing him”.
Abrams was not sure about how he would address Yelchin’s death within the film. Chris Pine was back as Capt. James Kirk, as was Karl Urban (Bones), Zoe Saldana (Uhura), Zachary Quinto (Spock), Yelchin (Chekov) and John Cho (Sulu), who is revealed to be gay in the latest film. The rebooted “Trek” remains blindingly colorful and dizzingly dazzling eye and ear candy.
This sense of playfulness is established from the get-go, with an enjoyably indulgent slow-motion sequence used to introduce the crew in relaxation mode aboard the USS Enterprise – enjoying the pleasure of each other’s company, bantering in corridors, catching up on old times.
“Star Trek Beyond” was supposed to be business as usual, with a few tweaks behind the scenes.

But show business is still a business and Abrams considered Anton’s absence in the future Star Trek films.
