‘Star Trek: Discovery’ Premiere Pushed to May

Executive producers Bryan Fuller and Alex Kurtzman apparently approached CBS execs last week to request more time to put the show together, and so it was agreed upon that Star Trek: Discovery would be better suited for a debut in May 2017, rather than the planned bow in January.

Both series will debut on CBS and then air exclusively on the subscription streaming network CBS All Access.

“We have an fantastic inaugural slate of originals for CBS All Access and world-class creative teams behind each of our shows”, said Marc DeBevoise, president and chief operating officer, CBS Interactive.

CBS Television Studios president David Stapf told The Hollywood Reporter the studio is extremely impressed with the “incredibly vivid and compelling” vision for Discovery. Christine Beranski reprises her role as Diane Lockhart, the senior partner of the law firm which featured (under several different names) throughout The Good Wife. “We aim to dream big and deliver. and these extra few months will help us achieve a vision we can all be proud of”.

Set one year after the events of The Good Wife finale, the spinoff also marks the return of creators Robert and Michelle King, who will serve as showrunners. And while there is probably a lot of pressure on Fuller and team to create something worthwhile for the fans, delivering the new series during the mid-season just isn’t the best idea.

Also coming to the platform in September: A new digital edition of Big Brother, called Big Brother: Over the Top.

CBS All Access remains on track for releasing a new original series every quarter.
