Sure, there’s only been three movies since then, so it’s probably not that major of a feat. It’s a far cry from 2009’s Star Trek or 2012’s Star Trek Into Darkness, which made $75.2 million and $70.2 million respectively, but still very good in this summer which has not been kind to sequels.

“Star Trek Beyond” has received strong reviews and opening day audiences gave it an “A-” CinemaScore.

For the past year, I’ve been living in the incredible island nation of Grenada.

The Secret Life of Pets finished in second-place with $29.3 million, dropping 42% from last weekend.

If the film can conquer China – not unlike how “Terminator: Genisys” and “Warcraft” were saved overseas – then “Star Trek” will safely continue its four-decade cinematic mission.

It earned another $178.9 million for a massive global take of nearly $200 million.

Rounding out the top five, Ghostbusters and the micro-budget chiller Lights Out both earned $21.6 million, tying for fourth place. That would be a worrisome, even disastrous result for a film that carries a US$105 million budget.

Quinto adds, “A lot of audiences responded really, really positively to that”.

The fifth animated pre-historic venture in the series, Ice Age: Collision Course, opened in fifth place with a just $21 million.

While its predecessor, 2009’s “Dawn of the Dinosaur”, picked up 77.8 per cent of its 886.7 million dollars worldwide haul in foreign markets.

The brand-new “Star Trek” will introduce new characters seeking imaginative new worlds and new civilizations, while exploring the dramatic contemporary themes that have been a signature of the franchise since its inception in 1966.

Ray Romano, John Leguizamo, Denis Leary and Jennifer Lopez band together in “Ice Age: Collision Course”.

“The Secret Life of Pets” and “Ghostbusters” bested the weekend’s other new releases. Amazon is releasing the film through a distribution partnership with Lionsgate.
