It has been 50 years since Captain Kirk and the crew of the Starship Enterprise boldly went where no one had gone before.

The level of research and organization to pull off the definitive history of a 50-year-old francise is staggering – and making it a compelling read is even more hard.

This Saturday, Sept. 10, MeTV Des Moines celebrates the 50th Anniversary of Star Trek with two special programs.

But the brief homage by Giuseppe Fiorentino, second-in-command at L’Osservatore Romano, is not so much about the show’s artistic merits as it is about the message that “Star Trek” conveyed to a world afflicted by so many tensions – a world much like the present day.

“I remember sitting there, chewing on my fingernails, going, ‘Oh, my gosh, I wish I was right there, ‘” explained Shay West, a “Star Trek” fan since watching the original series with her dad. Subsequent films included “First Contact”.

Since its original release in 1966 that ran for three seasons, the franchise has aired four sequel series, with a fifth installment to start airing on a new CBS streaming service in 2017. “We wanted it to feel like, nearly like an episode of the original series had been injected with a little bit of, you know modern super-pizzazz”, Pegg said of Star Trek Beyond. And for extra feels, it’s directed (and hosted) by Nimoy’s adult son Adam.

“It has to be Star Trek’s inspirational message for the future – inspirational and positive”. “I was so excited about that, and the fact is. that excitement has never left me”.
