Star Wars 7 sets $57 million opening night record
Disney bought “Star Wars” producer Lucasfilm for $4 billion in 2012 and spent more than $200 million to produce “Force Awakens”. “The $120.5 million opening day for Star Wars marks the largest Friday, opening day and single day records previously held by Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 at $91 million”, reported Brad Brevat.

With Thursday night previews, the film grossed $57 million in the domestic market, another record that also beats Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2’s record of $43.5 million.
The opening weekend record is now held by Jurassic World, which premiered earlier in 2015 to $208.8 million at the box office.
Jurassic World had the advantage of opening in China on the same weekend it opened everywhere else, whereas The Force Awakens won’t debut in the world’s second biggest cinema-going territory until 9 January. Greenfield said the success of “Force Awakens” would not offset the impact of subscriber losses at ESPN. “The Times” definitive “Star Wars’ style guide” class=”local_link” target=”_blank”>Is it Wookie or Wookiee?
It is also the first movie to cross $100 million in one day in North America.
The latest film in the iconic franchise has smashed box office records in the USA and Canada after pulling in $57million (£38m) on its first night. The film has broken opening day records globally as well – From the United Kingdom ($24.7 million) to Germany ($12.7 million ), to France ($11.2 million), Australia ($10.4 million), and the list goes on.
Force Awakens has a shot at becoming the highest-grossing movie of all time, according to some analysts. The release of the first Star Wars movie under the Disney banner has alleviated those doubts.
“Star Wars” fever spread through movie theaters around the globe on Friday, even reaching the White House, as the franchise yet again began toppling box-office records with waves of lightsaber-wielding fans.
The 73-year-old actor – who has reprised the role of Han Solo for the much-anticipated new movie – feels “proud” of the J.J. Abrams-directed film and touched by the support of fans.
