A witness said that Hamill slipped when making the arduous ascent up the uneven rock-cut steps, near where two American tourists died in separate falls in 2009.
Luckily, Hamill was saved by a quick-thinking tour guide from the Irish Office of Public Works, who leaped into action and pulled him back to safety.
In film notes, the producers at Lucasfilm had raised concerns ahead of the shoot, saying: “Our lead actor is in his 60s and less agile than most”.
This isn’t the first time a mishap has occurred on the set of the new Star Wars movie as Harrison Ford and JJ Abrams both sutained injuries when the door of the Millennium Falcon crashed down.
With it’s predecessor not even released yet, little is known about Rian Johnson’s Star Wars: Episode VIII.
The Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport has been advised of filming taking place on Sceilig Mhichíl, (also known as Skellig Michael or Great Skellig Island), Co.
Star Wars Episode VII is due to hit cinemas in December.
But she said she had “balanced the positive benefit it will reap for the Irish film industry and the South Kerry region with the need to ensure that the island’s unique environment and wildlife is fully protected”.

However, writing in The Irish Times recently, Fintan O’Toole decried the Government’s acquiescence to Star Wars owners Disney over filming privileges at the Unesco World Heritage Site, and the notion that the State has sold out an integreal part of Ireland’s national heritage.
