“It’s probably going to do in the region of 75 million (U.S. dollars) plus in Australia which the only other film to pass 75 million is Avatar”.
John Boyega is seen as Finn in a scene from The Force Awakens, which made its worldwide debut in most markets late last week.
“For “Star Wars” fans and Hollywood, this weekend was like the Super Bowl, the World Series and the Kentucky Derby all rolled into one perfectly realized movie event”, said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at Rentrak. “Disney has rebooted the Star Wars franchise”, said Robert Marich, author of Marketing to Moviegoers. ORIGINAL STARS The return of stars such as Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher from the original 1977 Star Wars film along with younger actors in prominent roles has been cited by critics as a reason for the new film’s appeal across a range of moviegoers. Lastly this was the biggest weekend in United States history at the box office, $313.3 million (previously June 12-14 2015 with $273.8 million, the weekend Jurassic World opened). The Force Awakens’ success caps off a record year for the studio, which included Avengers: Age of Ultron, Inside Out, Cinderella, and Ant-Man. We won’t know the exact numbers until Monday, but early estimates have the film earning an estimated $238 million. Quite possibly. And what film will unseat it from the #1 box office throne? Sneaking into the top ten were two Bollywood flicks, Dilwale ($1.8 million) and Bajirao Mastani ($1.6 million), while foreign language Oscar contender Son of Saul brought in a respectible $38,891 on three screens.
