‘Star Wars’ awakens to biggest box office opening ever

All over the world, “Star Wars” enthusiasts toted lightsabers and wore character costumes to packed opening-night showings of “The Force Awakens”. That surpassed the previous opening-day record of $43.5 million for the final “Harry Potter” movie in 2011.

As of Friday, The Force Awakens has had the biggest December release of any film in cinema history, opening in a total of 4,134 theaters domestically. After a tidal wave of hype, promotion and anticipation, Star Wars: The Force Awakens has finally gone on general release.
