Star Wars Battlefront beta impressions: Better than the prequel films

DICE has opted not to have any microtransactions in the upcoming Star Wars Battlefront, stating that the in-game currency is dependent exclusively on player performance. Other features that really made them like the “StarWars: Battlefront” beta is the fact that everything else were done in minimal and not overly exaggerated ancillaries such as weapons and war gears. Even if you have no particular love for the films the music, the sound effects, and the art design are beautifully realised and elevate an already good game into something truly special.

Across the board, lesser priced AMD cards continue to outperform competitor Nvidia GPUs, with the R9 290 outperforming the highly popular GTX 970 by an impressive 9 frames on WHQD (2560×1440), and a somewhat similar difference on Ultra HD (3840×2160) resolution. Check out our impressions video below, where Will and I discuss our thoughts, and debate a bit about whether Star Wars battlefront lives up to the hype.

The second thing I noticed is that Rebels and Stormtroopers are very easy to tell apart. These four join the previously announced multiplayer modes Drop Zone, Fighter Squadron, Hero Battle, and Walker Assault.

The beta itself advises you to get a few practice in before tackling the 40-man Walker Assault mode, which still seems to be the jewel in Battlefront’s lightsabre.

Have you had a chance to play the beta? Obviously DICE are able to make their Battlefield-esque experience feel considerably more authentic, but although the physics and animation is familiar the details are different.

Best of all is when multiple Escape Pods land at the same time-something I’ve seen happen twice so far. I’ve felt that way more than a few times during the beta.

While the official “Star Wars Battlefront” companion app will only be available as a web application during the beta, an iOS and Android mobile version will be released sometime before the game’s full launch on November 17. But uh…they exist. And you can become Luke Skywalker/Darth Vader if you’re the lucky person who snatches the corresponding power-up. It’s skill-based. You get better at holding the muzzle down.

Also of note is the progression system. Will it provide hundreds of hours of gameplay and still feel fresh like Battlefield and Call of Duty?

Early access to the beta has been great but it’s still unable to answer the biggest question that hangs over Battlefront: is there enough content and longevity to make it more than just a passing novelty? Or will we lose interest after performing the same Force Choke for the umpteenth time?
