For the entire weekend, the movie easily got Chinese viewers to shell out about $53 million, according to Walt Disney Co, which owns the film.
Star Wars Time report that it will only premiere with Captain America: Civil War, which is due into cinemas on May 6, 2016. “The Danish Girl”, $3.2 million. 19.
Star Wars posted a strong Saturday to claim 1st place for the fourth straight weekend. Domestically it is likely to finish up with around $900 million to $950 million by the time it’s done. But in a upset, The Revenant beat Force Awakens on Friday before the Star Wars blockbuster regained the box office lead Saturday.
It also took in $104 million internationally this weekend, bringing its global haul to more than $1.73 billion.
Note: Numbers include Sunday estimates and are three-day estimates. Avatar’s all-time worldwide record of $2.788 million certainly isn’t out of range either.
The Revenant has come the closest to knocking Star Wars out of the top spot for the weekend. Its $38 million was still a strong opening for the month of January. It bested Leonardo DiCaprio’s “The Revenant”.
Among awards season hopefuls, Tarantino’s “The Hateful Eight” dropped a steep 60% from its wide release bow despite adding 464 theaters.
Daddy’s Home has proven surprisingly resilient despite lackluster reviews, falling to third with an estimated $15 million, but has topped $116.3 million in domestic revenue.
Focus Features opened the thriller “The Forest”, starring Natalie Dormer and Taylor Kinney, in 2,451 locations, where it grossed $13.1 million for a fourth place finish. Being a low budget movie, it should be fairly profitable before it exits theaters. The film should end its domestic run with $85 million to $90 million.
The Big Short did not do much moving around on the list (remaining in seventh), but an estimated $6.3 million brought it up to $42.9 million against $28 million in costs.
