Star Wars Becomes Top Grossing North American Film Ever
It also holds U.S. records for the biggest opening-Friday/single-day record ($119.1 million), biggest opening weekend ($390.85 million), and fastest to gross $1 billion globally (12 days). But it is still far from dethroning Avatar as the highest-grossing movie of all time worldwide.

Before the latest “Star Wars” installment, “Avatar”, which was released in 2009, was the top-grossing film with $760.5 million.
In just 20 days of release, the seventh Star Wars film has hit a domestic total of $758.2 million (as of yesterday). “We feel [fan support] here and it drives us every day, and it will continue to in the very bright future of ‘Star Wars, ‘” the studio said.
“‘The Force Awakens” has been everything Disney could have hoped for as a “Star Wars’ reboot, both in terms of box-office performance and critical acclaim”, Creutz said.
And that’s without the second biggest movie market in the world, China.
The “humbled and grateful” company thanked its fans for helping it reach the milestone, saying that without them “there is no Star Wars”. The film has been able to beat the box office record in less than three weeks since its release, which is nothing short of spectacular.
It will only take four weekends for Star Wars: The Force Awakens to pass Jurassic World on the worldwide box office chart, analysts confirm.
At $US1.56 billion in global earnings, The Force Awakens still has some work ahead to overtake Avatar ($US2.79 billion) or another Cameron blockbuster, Titanic ($US2.19 billion).
The movie stars most of the original cast from the classic films.

The movie opens in China on January 9, which will give the grosses a significant boost, but some are now predicting the film may end up in the mid-$2 billion range.
