‘Star Wars’ box office tracker: Thursday night opening defeats ‘Potter’ record
The seventh instalment of the sci-fi saga is clearly a force to be reckoned with.

With the latest opening weekend for a Blockbuster movie set in June, Star Wars: The Force Awakens may dethrone Jurassic World less than six months after it set a new record. Not only that, but no December release has ever made $100 million in its opening weekend, never mind in just one freaking day.

The Walt Disney Co. on Saturday said the film made an estimated $120.5 million from Thursday night previews and opening day Friday.
Disney’s own estimates remain more conservative, hovering around the $220 million mark.
To give context, the previous record holder was Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2, which opened to $43.5 million on a Thursday night in 2011. That record have previously been set earlier in the year by Jurassic World, which gathered in $208.8m.
The film hit $250 million in worldwide ticket sales in only three days after beginning its rollout overseas on Wednesday, thus becoming the fastest movie to cross $200 million globally.
The Harry Potter film holds the all-time record for opening day at $91 million, but the new Star Wars is expected to also force it out of that slot.
Disney, which paid more than $4 billion for Lucasfilm in 2009, had been downplaying expectations, but rival studios and industry analysts believe that “The Force Awakens” will open to $210 million or more. It’s highly probable that “The Force Awakens” will hyperspeed past “Jurassic World’s” $316.1 million worldwide and $524.9 global opening records as well.
