Star Wars: The Force Awakens just became the #1 all-time in domestic box office, beating Avatar’s $760.5 million, Disney announced in an official press release Wednesday night, based on early box office results.

It only took the J.J. In fact, industry analysts anticipate “Star Wars” may not overcome “Avatar’s” commanding position at the top of the world ranking. The latest Star Wars film is now the highest-grossing film of all time at the domestic box office.

“We are proud of these records, but know that they would not be possible without fans” enthusiasm and continued support”, Disney said in a statement.

Directed by JJ Abrams and starring Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Andy Serkis, Oscar Isaac and Gwendoline Christie, Star Wars: The Force Awakens is out in cinemas now. The blockbuster also crossed its $800 million mark at the global box office on Wednesday, according to the company. Meanwhile in Australia, Star Wars: The Force Awakens is still a long way off from becoming its highest-grossing film.

All said, “Force Awakens” may not be the inflation-adjusted champion, but not even a month into its box office run, “Episode VII” certainly has momentum in its corner.

Biggest opening day, biggest single day, biggest Christmas day and biggest opening week are just some of the records the film has broken here in the U.S.

To prepare for the film’s release, Disney has enlisted the help of Chinese A-list pop star Lu Han.

It remains to be seen whether the film can reach “Avatar’s” worldwide record of almost $2.8 billion.

The movie opens in China on January 9, which will give the grosses a significant boost, but some are now predicting the film may end up in the mid-$2 billion range.
