‘Star Wars’ Breaks Opening Day Record with $120.5 Million
“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” grossed an estimated $238 million for the studio in the U.S. and Canada through Sunday, the biggest opening weekend for a film ever, reports Box Office Mojo.

The projections from Walt Disney Co late Friday indicated the film could eclipse the US$208.8 million record set by dinosaur adventure film “Jurassic World” in June.
It smashed the biggest Friday and biggest single-day record in North America, exceeding the 91 million USA dollars of “Deathly Hallows 2” by 29.5 million.
Disney gushed that combined with Friday figures, ticket sales “are pointing to a total day of $100M+ for a new industry record… and the first triple-digit-million day ever!”
The Force Awakens also stars Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Andy Serkis and Domhnall Gleeson, plus a secret stormtrooper cameo from Bond actor Daniel Craig.
The Force Awakens’ domestic opening is the crowning achievement in a long, long list of broken box office records. Because of the holidays, movies opening in December usually see a smaller debut but much, much bigger multiples.
Force Awakens began opening around the world on Wednesday.
In 2015, four films have passed the $1 billion global mark: Minions ($1.157 billion), Avengers: Age of Ultron ($1.4 billion), Furious 7 ($1.514 billion), and Jurassic World.
Given the lack of direct competition in the weeks ahead – most films cleared out of the way of Star Wars once its release date was announced – The Force Awakens has a clear run at a $2bn box office take, it seems.
“The Force Awakens” incredible performance has been apparent since the opening night, earning a record-setting of $57 million just hours after it opened on Thursday night.
That’s because the seventh film in the main Star Wars franchise is rewriting the record books – even if an ol’ Jedi scribe (Lawrence Kasdan) helped recharge the story.

“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” was released on more screens than any other film this month, playing in more than 4,000 theaters nationwide, according to Disney.
