The animated Alvin and the Chipmunks returned to the box office this weekend with its fourth installment.
The movie’s global haul is being revised upwards from Sunday’s estimate of $279 million to $281 million, the No. 3 opening of all time behind Jurassic World ($316 million) and the final Harry Potter film ($314 million).
Initially, “Jurassic” was thought to have held on to the record for the biggest worldwide opening weekend.
63% – Percentage of this weekend’s audience who were over the age of 25.
Buzz about the film has been building for over a year, and now, between the hype and critics’ positive reviews, it’s no surprise it’s bringing record numbers at the gate.
The latest film in the “Star Wars” franchise stars veterans Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, along with newcomers John, Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Andy Serkis and Domhnall Gleeson. The movie is already in striking distance of earning back that $550 million, and tracking toward a couple billion total gross when it’s all said and done, plus home media.
$4 billion – The price Disney paid for the franchise’s production company, Lucasfilm, in 2012. It’s been inextricably linked to “Star Wars” since 1977, when Kenner sold empty boxes at the holidays because it couldn’t keep up with demand for action figures.
The new Star Wars film also set a new opening night record in the U.S. and Canada.
20 – Duration in hours of the “Star Wars” movie marathon that took place in theaters across the country last week.
