THE 3D epic “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” held its premiere yesterday at Shanghai Grand Theater.
“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” has reached $1 billion at the box office, reaching the milestone with record-setting hyper speed.
Walt Disney Co said in a statement on Saturday that Star Wars: The Force Awakens had generated box office receipts of $890.3 million globally through December 25.
The blockbuster installment, the seventh of the kind, posted the biggest second-weekend box office total ever recorded in North America by raking in more than $153 million in the USA and Canada, Xinhua quoted the box office figures gathered by Rentrak.
“It’s absolutely mind-blowing that “Star Wars” could get to a billion dollars in 12 days and it hasn’t even opened in China, the second biggest movie market in the world”.
The Force Awakens now has a 94 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and 91 percent of more than 150,000 audience reviews give the movie 3.5 stars or higher. It scored the biggest worldwide debut with $529 million.
Mark Wahlberg and Will Ferrell’s new comedy Daddy’s Home debuts in a distant second place with $38.8 million (£25.9 million), while Jennifer Lawrence’s drama Joy is new at three with $17.5 million (£11.7 million), according to early studio estimates. Besides Star Wars, the Mouse House released Marvel’s “Avengers: Age of Ultron” ($459-million) and Pixar’s “Inside Out” ($356.5-million).
Jeff Bock, of industry tracker Exhibitor Relations, said “The Force Awakens” is likely to dethrone James Cameron’s “Avatar” as the top-grossing film of all time in North America.
But “Point Break”, a remake of the 1991 Kathryn Bigelow cult favorite, wiped out.
Movies that earned a lump of coal include Will Smith’s “Concussion”.
