‘Star Wars’ crushes opening day record, global sales near $130 mln
If the estimates hold, “The Force Awakens” will easily beat the previous Thursday-night record of $43.5 million by Warner Bros.’ “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2” in July 2011.

It collected $US120.5 million on Friday, its first full day in domestic cinemas, the highest single-day ticket sales ever.
The movie is likely to become the highest grossing film in an opening weekend Disney added, while reporting that it had already made US$250 million globally. It was also the first film to ever make more than $100 million on any given day.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens has smashed through the Australian opening weekend and opening week box office records and is set to gross more than Harry Potter and Avatar.
It was the largest opening weekend in North America, with $238 million in ticket sales.
The film also set a new opening day box office record in the United Kingdom and Ireland as well.
However, “The Force Awakens” has yet to open in China, the world’s second biggest film market. “The Force Awakens” cracked the $100 million mark less than 24 hours after it started rolling out in theatres on December 17. “There are literally millions of tickets available for this weekend, and exhibitors have a lot of flexibility in terms of capacity and increasing the number of shows based on demand”.
The sci-fi adventure film starring Daisy Ridley, John Boyega and Harrison Ford has been a intergalactic hit with both fans and critics. Disney bought Star Wars producer Lucasfilm for $4-billion in 2012 and spent more than $200-million to produce Force Awakens. “Sith” generated almost $850 million in worldwide box office.
Ticket sales are estimated to have made $238m (£159.7m) – the previous record was held by Jurassic World, which took $208.8m in June. At the time, mass media and entertainment conglomerate said it would continue producing the Star Wars saga and expand the franchise in the future.

There’s no denying that Star Wars: The Force Awakens will continue to rake in hundreds of millions, but only time will tell if it has the strength and endurance to climb to the very top of the box office charts.
