‘Star Wars: Force Awakens’ takes over ‘Avatar’ box office record
Disney released a statement via StarWars.com, thanking fans for their continued support. With more Star Wars sequels in the works, one can only speculate on the future of the franchise. “There has indeed been an awakening – and it’s all thanks to you”, it said.

“The Force Awakens” has taken in $1.5 billion so far globally, and is already the fourth highest-grossing movie of all time after just three weeks in release, Disney said. As of Tuesday, “The Force Awakens” had grossed $758.2 million in North America and $799.1 million internationally, giving the film a global total of $1.557 billion. To date, Star Wars has earned $1.557 billion worldwide, with $799 million overseas alone. It is also expected to beat Avatar’s record in worldwide gross sales since time memorial for any movie featured.
The upcoming release on Saturday in the huge Chinese market of the film directed by J.J. Abrams could help give it a further push to warp speed.
“The breakneck pace with which The Force Awakens is hitting major box-office milestones is astonishing”, says Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for Rentrak. The film pulled in about $90.2 million in the USA over the last weekend for a total gross of $742.2 million, putting it ahead of Titanic for second place on the all-time list (not adjusted for inflation), and about $20 million behind Avatar.
However, many have argued that The Force Awakens’s box office takings are not as impressive as it first appears.
