“Star Wars: The Force Awakens”, the seventh film in the Lucasfilm franchise, has grossed $812 million so far in the USA and Canada alone, passing “Avatar’s” record of $760.5 million last week. Internationally it made another $146M (including a record-breaking $52.6M two-day opening in China) bringing its cume to $921M for a worldwide total of $1.73B, overtaking Jurassic World for number three all-time. The film now has in its sights No. 2 Titanic, with its $2.2 billion box office haul in 1997-98, and No. 1 Avatar, from 2009-2010 at $2.8 billion. The ability to surpass Avatar as the all time highest grossing film is still being discussed by some analysts.
“I will say that it seems preposterous and wrong that the main character of the movie is not well represented in what is clearly a huge piece of the Star Wars world in terms of merchandising”.
However, the latest Star Wars sequel, directed by J.J. Researcher Rentrak Corp. estimates “Furious 7” generated $391.4 million in the country in 2015 and “Monster Hunt”, a Chinese fantasy movie, grossed $393.2 million. Basically, this has been an awesome weekend for DiCaprio, director Alejandro G. Inarritu, and The Revenant, as the movie went on to claim Golden Globes for DiCaprio’s grueling performance, Innaritu’s direction, and Best Picture (Drama) in addition to all its box office success. With $38 million The Revenant launched its wide release higher than most expectations. The movie is still showing in theaters in North America as well, and still earning top dollar in just about every market it’s being shown in. The Natalie Dormer-starring horror film premiered with $13.1 million domestically, ahead of the $8 million to $9 million that was expected. Combined with its grosses from the two weeks it spent in limited release, “The Revenant” has now made 39.5 million.
