‘Star Wars’ Heading for Over $200 Million Opening Weekend in U.S.
As if the pre-order records, overseas earnings, and Thursday night showing cumes weren’t enough of an indication that Star Wars: The Force Awakens is a box office hit, the latest projection suggests that the film is about to break three more box office records.

Yes, that’s a record, topping Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2 at $91.1 million set on its opening Friday in July 2011.
The seventh “Star Wars” movie is expected to sell more than $220 million of tickets at USA and Canadian theaters through Sunday, beating the record $208.8 million for “Jurassic World” in June, Walt Disney Co said on Saturday.
Disney executives hewed to the low end of expectations with the numbers well below those of rivals, who were projecting an opening weekend above $250 million.
Star Ward will head to Greece and India on December 24 while January 9 has been set as a debut date in China.
And the Star Wars $100 million is the first triple-digit million-day ever.
From the White House to Facebook, the Star Wars craze is cutting a wide swath as the long-awaited sequel “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” opened in theaters across the globe. It’s highly probable that “The Force Awakens” will hyperspeed past “Jurassic World’s” $316.1 million worldwide and $524.9 global opening records as well.
Strong reviews for the film, which is set 30 years after “Return of the Jedi”, have added to the fervor for “The Force Awakens”.
A lot is riding on the film for Disney, which paid $4.06 billion for Lucasfilm in 2012.
Rentrak’s Paul Dergarabedian, one of Hollywood’s best-known box office analysts, said the film’s opening night performance in the U.S. and Canada “portends a massive and potentially record-breaking opening day and weekend for the film”.

In third place, the Tina Fey and Amy Poehler comedy “Sisters” earned an estimated $13.42 million in its opening weekend. The fourth installment in the Alvin series should make $14 million to $16 million from 3,653 locations.
