Star Wars is Set to Rewrite the Record Book

Star Wars The Force Awakens box office collections: “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” hauled in an estimated $250 million at global movie box offices through Friday and was on track to finish its opening weekend with record USA and Canadian ticket sales, Walt Disney Co said on Saturday.

It smashed the biggest Friday and biggest single-day record in North America, exceeding the 91 million US dollars of “Deathly Hallows 2” by 29.5 million.

The J.J. Abrams-directed film took in an estimated $517 million at box offices around the world, second only to the global opening weekend record also set earlier this year by “Jurassic World” at $525.5 million (around AU$721.7 million or £364.6 million). Whatever the case, $238 million is well above the previous U.S. record-holder, Jurassic World, which made $208.8 million during its opening. Astonishing though it is, that is just the second biggest opening weekend globally, behind Jurassic World, which took $US524.9 million on its opening weekend in June.

Disney, the studio behind the newest installment in the Star Wars series, is set to release four more Star Wars films.

The film is being screened in 4,134 theaters in the United States and Canada, according to industry tracker Rentrak. The film scored the biggest December opening weekend in numerous territories, including the Netherlands, Japan, Portugal, Italy, Argentina and Brazil.
