Already benefiting from repeat viewings, “The Force Awakens” will see little by of competition as it heads toward its January 9 premiere in China. Then again, as the first theatrically released Star Wars film in seven years – 2008’sThe Clone Wars was the last, not 2005’sRevenge of the Sith, if you want a handy general knowledge stumper – it was always going to be.
Disney shares were up 1.1% on the stock market today, but the stock remains below its 50-day and 200-day markers after tumbling following the film’s initial release.
Other records for The Force Awakens: the biggest domestic debut of all time, a single-day box office record of $119.1 million, and the first movie to make $100 million in one day at the domestic box office. Domestically, Disney earned $238 million in the opening weekend marking the biggest opening in Hollywood’s history, smashing the $208.8 million record set by Jurassic World.
How many times did you see Star Wars: The Force Awakens this weekend? Not likely to be winning a lot of records is Daddy’s Home, the critically slammed comedy starring Mark Wahlberg and Will Ferrell.
A flurry of new films also opened in the top 10 this weekend.
The skyrocketing success of the latest “Star Wars” has stoked U.S. film industry hopes that struggling theaters can thrive in the face of a growing shift to online video streaming. The previous Christmas weekend champ was Sherlock Holmes in 2009 with a $62.3 million opening.
“It’s great for the audiences, great for studios and theater owners in particular who can point to this and say the movie theater industry is as viable and relevant as it’s ever been”, he said.
