Star Wars more popular with men than women
The long-awaited seventh film in the space saga – “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” – collected a record-smashing $57 million in ticket sales Thursday night in the United States and Canada. Reviews of the movie have so far been highly positive, with many drawing favorable comparisons to the most recent Star Wars movies made by George Lucas between 1999 and 2005.

“For “Star Wars” fans and Hollywood, this weekend was like the Super Bowl, the World Series and the Kentucky Derby all rolled into one perfectly realized movie event”, said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at Rentrak.
NEW YORK (AP) – “Star Wars” fever spread through movie theaters around the globe on Friday, even reaching the White House, as the franchise yet again began toppling box-office records with waves of lightsaber-wielding fans. “The Force Awakens” was heading toward a Thursday night-Friday total of more than $120 million domestically, said Dave Hollis, head of distribution for Disney. More than $100 million advance tickets (also a record) were sold ahead of the opening of “The Force Awakens”, much of those going toward Thursday and Friday shows. When you first saw a Star Wars film depends a lot on how old you are, as younger Americans are unsurprisingly a lot more likely to have first seen the movies when they were kids. Theaters added showtimes to meet demand, Disney said. Star Wars has smashed that to bits, with a take of $238m in just one weekend.
3-D and Imax screenings are helping to propel the record gross. Disney bought “Star Wars” producer Lucasfilm for $4 billion in 2012.
According to industry journal Screen International, though, such an outcome “remains a distinct possibility” given the film’s current box office performance.
Anticipation is so high that speculation has already emerged that “The Force Awakens” could set a new record for worldwide gross by passing “Avatar” at $2.78 billion.

But so far, “The Force Awakens” is attracting the interest of seemingly everyone. R2-D2 also interacted with reporters by playing the Star Wars theme song and some patriotic tunes.
