Star Wars on course to land USA box office record
The box office has not seen a performance like this since Universal’s “Jurassic World” opened in June ($208.8 million) and, prior to that, 2012’s premiere of “Marvel’s The Avengers” from Disney ($207.4 million).

There’s no denying that Star Wars: The Force Awakens will continue to rake in hundreds of millions, but only time will tell if it has the strength and endurance to climb to the very top of the box office charts. It also broke records in the UK, Australia, Russia, and many more besides. However, “The Force Awakens” total does not include sales in China, where the movie won’t open until January 9. After all, how can a company that is known for its feel-good princess movies do justice to epic franchises like Indiana Jones and Star Wars?
The long-awaited sequel is being screened in 4,134 theaters in the United States and Canada, according to Rentrak.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens sets new box office record. The film, directed by J.J. Abrams, grossed $238 million in North America alone.
Disney plans four “Star Wars” movies through 2019, plus major expansions at its U.S. theme parks to incorporate the droids, spaceships and otherworldly creatures of the universe Lucas invented.
The latest film, which some analysts expect to gross more than $2 billion, stars Daisy Ridley, John Boyega and Oscar Isaac. Audiences awarded an “A” grade in polling by survey firm CinemaScore.
A Rentrak audience survey shows that The Force Awakens audience was evenly split in age (with moviegoers older than 25 representing 54%, and 46% of the crowd under 25) and mostly male (66%). The current record-holder is Avatar, which generated US$2.8 billion worldwide after its December 2009 release.

Even if the preliminary numbers for this weekend are off by a considerable margin, The Force Awakens is still on track to become the biggest opening weekend in the history of cinema.
