Strong reviews for the film, which is set 30 years after “Return of the Jedi, ” have added to the fervor for “The Force Awakens”. Audiences set a number of records for advance ticket sales on sites like Fandango. Tune in on Sunday to see if Star Wars can boldly go where no blockbuster franchise has gone before, in an international-rollout-on-thousands-of-screens-and-did-it-hit-all-the-quadrants-way.
Over the past few days, the talk of the planet has been about Star Wars: The Force Awakens – and there are now box office numbers that truly prove just that.
“The Force Awakens” started screening at 7 p.m. on Thursday with hundreds of sellouts.
The original release that launched this entire franchise, 1977’s “Star Wars”, is still the second biggest film ever ($1.49 billion) when adjusted for inflation – trailing only the 1939 classic “Gone With the Wind” ($1.68 billion). “The Force Awakens” brought in a record $120 million-plus in its first day at the North American box office, so its worldwide or global total is roughly $250 million.
Disney is on track to smash opening weekend records as fans flock to cinemas for Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
The record for a weekend’s take looks to be the next to fall.
The sci-fi thriller has also gone on to break seven more records.
“They tailored the campaign to every geography around the world, and did it in a way that still preserved some of the mystery of the film while not leaving a single stone unturned”.
Star Wars does not share the same universal popularity as other films in certain key markets around the world, such as China.
“The Force Awakens” has already brought in an estimated $517 million, although that figure does not exceed the worldwide first-weekend receipts of $524 million for “Jurassic World”.
As far as all-time box office sales, two films by James Cameron hold the record – “Avatar” (US$2.78 billion) and “Titanic” (US$2.18 billion).

Critics lauded the movie’s throwback feel, doses of humor and the performances of newcomers Daisy Ridley, John Boyega and Oscar Isaac. Force Awakens does not debut in the world’s 2nd-largest movie going market until 9 January.
