‘Star Wars’ passes ‘Avatar’ for N. America box office record
Within two weeks, The Force Awakens set several records, including biggest all-time and December debut which lead to the biggest overall movie-going weekend of all time, Disney said. The Force Awakens also lost its number one place at the box office to local language movie entitle Ip Man 3.

The new Star Wars movie took just 20 days to take more money at the box office in the U.S. than Avatar and it is on track to become the most popular movie of all time worldwide.
The upcoming release on Saturday in the huge Chinese market of the film directed by J. J. Abrams could help give it a further push to warp speed. Two days later, on Tuesday, Star Wars reached $758 million, only $2 million behind the record. When pricing increases are factored in, Gone With the Wind remains the highest-grossing film in history with $1.7 billion and the first Star Wars is runner-up with $1.5 billion.
There’s a party on Endor tonight as Disney – and the planet’s furry inhabitants, of course – celebrates another milestone in “The Force Awakens”‘s box-office performance.
In total, cinemas across the United Kingdom and Ireland brought in a record £1.30bn, according to tracking organisation Rentrak, with Spectre and The Force Awakens contributing heavily.
Avatar still holds the worldwide gross record at $2.788 billion.
Cameron’s other epic, “Titanic”, sits second on the list, with $2.19 billion, while this summer’s “Jurassic World” is third, at $1.67 billion, according to Box Office Mojo.

Internationally, the Daisy Ridley starrer has garnered $799.1 million for a global total of $1.56 billion.
