“The Force Awakens” opened this weekend in virtually every major market except Greece, India and China, where it will debut on January 9.
Disney has confirmed that The Force Awakens made $279 million during its five-day worldwide debut, bringing its global earnings to $517 million. The group, a Mardi Gras parade club, is celebrating the premiere of the latest “Star Wars” movie with costume…
As excited fans gathered at theaters around the country last night, investors and film analysts watched ticket sales to see whether The Force Awakens would beat box office expectations. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2 previously reigned by earning $91.1 million in July 2011. Disney’s carefully planned release of film trailers and tidbits of information over several months also boosted ticket sales, he said.
The new “Star Wars” film is the seventh installment in the series created by George Lucas in 1977.
Rounding out the eight most-popular movies this weekend, in the US and Canada and as estimated by the studios and Rentrak, were “Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 2” ($5.7 million), “Creed” ($5 million), “The Good Dinosaur” ($4.2 million), “Krampus” ($3.8 million) and “In The Heart Of The Sea” ($3.5 million).
Disney Ireland vice president Trish Long said the company was “delighted” with sales.
China could hold the key to The Force Awakens’ success. It managed to leapfrog those other two films despite showing on fewer screens.
The current record holder is Avatar, which generated $US2.8 billion worldwide after its December 2009 release. That is until the spinoff movies start rolling in and America rediscovers their love for Lobot and Lando in, Star Wars: Among The Clouds. Disney bought Lucasfilm for US$4 billion in 2012 and spent more than US$200 million to produce The Force Awakens.
