Star Wars sales rocket into hyperspace, smash box office records
“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” hauled in an estimated $250 million at global movie box offices through Friday and was on track to finish its opening weekend with record US and Canadian ticket sales, Walt Disney Co said on Saturday.

And it doesn’t stop there.
“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” became the biggest opening in movie history bringing in an estimated $238 million in the USA this weekend. Astonishing though it is, that is just the second biggest opening weekend globally, behind Jurassic World, which took $US524.9 million on its opening weekend in June. It also netted the records for the biggest single day opening, the fastest movie to gross $1 million – taking only one day to achieve that feat – and helped set a new record for the most money ever taken in USA movie theaters in a single weekend. The film previously broke the record for the biggest opening day in the territory on Thursday.
“When you cue up all the footage and things that were shown, it’s really not a lot of the film, and I think that’s what makes it incredibly special”.
The newest film in the George Lucas-created franchise – directed by J.J. “It’s definitely, no question, a new all-time weekend record”, says Paul Dergarabedian, box office analyst for Rentrak. He said “Star Wars” profits won’t offset larger troubles Disney faces from shrinking subscribers at the ESPN sports network. Even though The Force Awakens blew past all predictions, both Road Chip and Sisters managed to hold their own, as both were expected to debut in the low to mid teens.
The Force Awakens has already smashed several film industry records.

Disney’s $4 billion purchase of Lucasfilm nearly looks like a bargain now. White House spokesman Josh Earnest also got into the spirit, posing for pictures with R2-D2 and two Stormtroopers in the press briefing room.
