Star Wars sets North America opening weekend record with US$238m
To put the huge weekend by “Awakens” in perspective, it made more than the opening weekends of “The Hobbit” trilogy (the big December release of the last three years) combined. According to Variety, J.J. Abrams’ “Episode VII” has already smashed a pair of opening box office records, and is well on its way to more. This breaks the record set by “Jurassic World” for the highest grossing four-day opening weekend. That was a significant hurdle for “Star Wars” to overcome.

China, with roughly 30,000 screens – the US has about 40,000 – delivered almost $100 million of the worldwide haul that “Jurassic World” managed in its opening weekend overseas this summer.
With Thursday night previews, the film grossed $57 million in the domestic market, another record that also beats Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2’s record of $43.5 million.
As expected, The Force Awakens made history. Critic site Rotten Tomatoes also gave The Force Awakens a positive rating of 95 percent. According to early polling from CinemaScore, the movie is getting an “A Grade” among general audience members and an “A-plus Grade” among women and children.
In third place, the Tina Fey and Amy Poehler comedy “Sisters” earned an estimated $13.42 million in its opening weekend.
These numbers do justice for the Walt Disney Company’s $4 billion purchase of LucasFilm.
“We’re making sure there are numerous daily showtimes for “Star Wars” available at all of our locations across the country”, said Mark Zoradi, CEO of Cinemark Holdings Inc., one of the largest exhibitors.
“The Force Awakens” falls just behind the worldwide record for an opening weekend.

“When you cue up all the footage and things that were shown, it’s really not a lot of the film, and I think that’s what makes it incredibly special”.
