Star Wars: The Force Awakens is on course to smash the record for the biggest box office debut weekend in North America, Disney has said.

Globally, “The Force Awakens” has taken in $517 million, according to estimates made by its production company, Walt Disney Co.
The film has beaten the last record holder, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 by a margin of $29.5 million.
The dinosaur blockbuster took in $525 million when it launched, making it the biggest Box Office opening ever.
Cue the Imperial March, because the new “Star Wars” is power-stepping its way into the record books with dramatic precision. Earlier in the year, Marvel congratulated the Jurassic World team when the dino sequel smashed The Avengers’ box office opening record.
Other records “The Force Awakens” created were the film with the biggest December debut, the biggest IMAX Thursday night, the biggest IMAX single-day and the biggest IMAX weekend.
Even if the preliminary numbers for this weekend are off by a considerable margin, The Force Awakens is still on track to become the biggest opening weekend in the history of cinema. The decision to delay the China opening was made by the country’s government, which reviews and dates of every foreign film with an eye toward protecting its homegrown film industry.
On top of that, the film has broken the half a billion dollar barrier worldwide in one weekend, too.
Critics applauded “Force Awakens”, which features newcomers Daisy Ridley, John Boyega and Oscar Isaac alongside original stars Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher. At the TCL Chinese Theater in Hollywood, devotees slept in lawn chairs for 10 days before the movie’s opening for the chance to get the best seats.

Needless to say, the $4 billion purchase by Disney of Lucasfilm is looking to be money well spent.
