“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” has also broken the record for the most IMAX ticket sales, reaching a total of $6.5 million on its first day.
The 2:35 minute spot offered teases into the backstories of the series’ newest characters, like John Boyega’s Finn, a stormtrooper who’s questioning his allegiances, Daisy Ridley’s scavenger Rey, seen exploring an old ship, and Adam Driver’s Darth Vader-obsessed Kylo Ren. The campaign titled The Force Awakens on the Great Wall kicked off on October 20. They’ve already sold eight times as many tickets as they had for their previous record holder, “The Hunger Games”.
Those who have been following “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” news may be quick to jump the gun and say Disney and Lucasfilm are feeding viewers too much. The Chinese are very Internet-savvy, they’ve had exposure to the films in the past several months, and we know that China also has quite an issue with piracy, so they’ve probably seen these movies before.
The Force Awakens will open in Australian cinemas on December 17. JJ Abrams directs the film.
