If you thought Han Solo had a bigger role than expected in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, there’s an excellent reason, the filmmakers wanted their money’s worth.
The Force Awakens, starring Harrison Ford, opened on Thursday (17Dec15) and immediately made its mark, taking £9.6 million on its first day.
Spoiler warning: Do not read the following if you have yet to see “Star Wars: The Force Awakens“. That’s $30 million more than Jurassic World’s opening weekend in June. The Force Awakens has a metascore of 81, a Rotten Tomatoes tomatometer of 95%, and an IMDB rating of 8.8.
Based on a conservative total box office estimate of US$750 million in North America and US$2.25 billion worldwide, J.P. Morgan believes the film should produce well over US$1 billion in profits.
Disney Co. bought LucasFilm – which was 100 percent owned by Star Wars franchise creator George Lucas – for billion roughly three years ago.
Fans of the franchise also came out in record numbers over the weekend to be introduced to new characters like Daisy Ridley’s scavenger Rey, Adam Driver’s villainous Kylo Ren, and John Boyega’s stormtrooper turned good Finn. This so-called “legacy pay deal” reflects the fact that their parts will increase in size in subsequent Star Wars films, which will be represented in larger earnings.
20 – Duration in hours of the “Star Wars” movie marathon that took place in theaters across the country last week. With some extra time to follow the new film, instead of rushing ahead of it, Star Wars Land can appeal to all generations of Star Wars fans.
