Star Wars smashes USA box office record
While Star Wars brought in an out-of-this-world $517 million (£347 million) on its opening weekend, Jurassic World drew in $525 million (£352 million) in sales in June, crowning it the biggest box office opening ever.

The movie’s worldwide opening is now pegged at $528 million, ahead of the record-setting $524.9 million global launch of Jurassic World this summer.
The 23-year-old British actor, who plays Finn in J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars: The Force Awakens, is fully embracing his newfound fame by showing up unexpectedly to screenings of the film to greet fans, thank them for their support and even pose for photos.
LOS ANGELES | The new “Star Wars” movie has set a global opening weekend record, smashing past the previous record holder “Jurassic World” to rake in $529 million, Disney said on Monday.
It also beat out Jurassic World, which, earlier this year, racked up $208.8 million in domestic box office sales.
Also debuting at the box office in the top 10 this weekend were four other films, whose numbers seemed miniscule compared to the “Star Wars” hauling.
58% – Percentage of this weekend’s audience that was male.
$4 billion – The price Disney paid for the franchise’s production company, Lucasfilm, in 2012.
The new Star Wars film is smashing records both locally and overseas.
Domestically, Star Wars: The Force Awakens grossed a benchmark $30 million on 391 IMAX screens, of which 359 were record-breaking.
