“The Force Awakens” hurtled toward $125 million in USA and Canadian ticket sales on Friday and a potential record-breaking $225 million through Sunday, giving the long-awaited movie a shot at the biggest opening weekend of all time. This gave the J.J. Abrams-directed picture the highest single-day profits on record and it became the first film to break the $100 million mark in a single day.
The latest entry in the “Star Wars” saga already broke the record for biggest opening day at the box office after its Thursday premiere. The Force Awakens also beat the record for Thursday night previews by taking in $57 million.
However, that tally included $US99 million in China, where The Force Awakens does not open until January 9.
Everyone knows that the new Star Wars is going to make a lot of money.
Overseas, “The Force Awakens” opened to $279 million as it played in every major market except China, India and Greece.
The Force Awakens has its sights set on Avatar’s highest grossing movie record, which now stands at $2.8 billion in global sales.
Speaking of his approach to The Force Awakens, he: “The fundamental thing was what do we want people to feel”.
Audiences awarded it an “A” rating in polling by survey firm CinemaScore, Disney said.
It sees original trilogy stars Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher reprise their Han Solo and Princess Leia roles alongside younger franchise newcomers. He said “Star Wars” profits won’t offset larger troubles that Disney faces from shrinking subscribers at the ESPN sports network.
On top of that, the film has broken the half a billion dollar barrier worldwide in one weekend, too. Jurassic World over its theatrical release made $652.7 million coming up just short of number two, Titanic.

According to industry journal Screen International, though, such an outcome “remains a distinct possibility” given the film’s current box office performance.
