‘Star Wars’ Steamrolls Rivals, Records at New Year’s Box Office
What’s more, the space opera has yet to come out in China – ranked as the world’s second-largest movie market – and will not open in the Far East country until January 9. Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg’s Christmas comedy Daddy’s Home managed a powerful second-place run, taking $29 million for the weekend with an impressive total of $93.7 million. The revisionist western from Quentin Tarantino racked up $16.2 million to finish in third place. The film has earned $61.7 million so far.
Perhaps contributing to the less-than-expected performance was controversy swirling around Tarantino and his film.
Starring Samuel L. Jackson, Kurt Russell and Jennifer Jason Leigh, the $62 million picture received three Golden Globe nominations – supporting actress for Leigh, best screenplay and original score (for composer Ennio Morricone). Comediennes Tina Fey and Amy Poehler are showing audiences are game for a laugh as their hit comedy Sisters added another $12.58 million to its piggy bank.
Paramount’s “Anomalisa” earned $140,000 from four locations for a per-screen average of $35,000. Pulling in an estimated $140,000, the R-rated stop-motion animated drama was written by Charlie Kaufman and co-directed with Duke Johnson.
In a message posted to his Twitter feed, he asked fans: “Do you love Star Wars?”.
As the year ended, 2015 became the industry’s record holder for the best box office year to date.

In addition to setting a new high mark in New Year’s box office history, the record-busting film blew past the domestic grosses of both “Jurassic World” ($652.3 million) and “Titanic” ($658.7 million) to become the second-highest earner of all time with $740.3 million in just 19 days of release.
