Now the film industry looks forward to 2016 that should have stand out hits of its own with big films like “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice”, “Captain America: Civil War”, and the first “Star Wars” spinoff film, “Rogue One” hitting theaters. If you can’t make money here, you need to get out of the money making business.
“Star Wars: The Force Awakens”, the seventh installment in the blockbuster sci-fi franchise, premiered in China Sunday night.
On Christmas Day, it grossed more than $765,000, setting the record as the highest-grossing Chinese movie in a single day in Singapore. That’s something to keep in mind.
Disney’s “The Force Awakens” is now the 10th highest box office performer on a worldwide basis. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the movie also gained another $39 million internationally, which allowed it to jump into the top 10 movies of all time internationally.
Its nearest rivals all officially opened later on Boxing Day – the Will Ferrell-Mark Wahlberg comedy Daddy’s Home ($2.8 million on 233 screens), Pixar’s The Good Dinosaur ($2 million on 387 screens), the animated sequel Alvin and the Chipmunks: Road Chip ($1.6 million on 340 screens) and the Jennifer Lawrence-Bradley Cooper bio-pic Joy ($1.4 million on 275 screens). People have already shown an interest in seeing the film multiple times.

One of the year’s biggest achievements finds a 2014 release earning a spot in the 2015 calendar year top ten. Finally, the week of Star Wars’ opening in China consist of weaker comps of mostly domestic films which may not be appealing to the moviegoers and I think this will further drive ticket sales given the amount of marketing DIS has invested in China. Final domestic figures will be released Monday. Worth noting, the headline numbers we see are just from the ticket sales and I believe that consumer product sales and theme parks could generate north of $3b for DIS. Many dressed up as their favorite Star Wars characters. It expands to regular digital theaters this weekend, so it will be a performance to watch for sure. Few are proclaiming it the best Star Wars movie to date, but it’s got a very strong case for third place right now, and not a shabby third place either.
