‘Star Wars’ the fastest to earn $1 billion at box office
Star Wars: The Force Awakens made it past $1 billion worldwide in 12 days, way faster than any other movie. In just 10 days it became the fifth most successful film in US history.

To date, the film had reached the billion dollars faster than Jurassic World from Universal Pictures, owned by Comcast Corp, which took 13 days to exceed the number after its release earlier this year, according to Rentrak. Star Wars also broke Jurassic World’s biggest ever opening weekend record with $529m globally. “The Force Awakens” doesn’t open in the world’s second-largest movie market until January 9.
The Daisy Ridley starrer, which was originally called “Shadow of the Empire”, had the biggest Christmas weekend ever at North America box office.
“The Force Awakens”, which cost an estimated $200 million to produce, debuted last weekend to record numbers.
“You nearly have to rewrite all the record books for this movie”, box office analyst Paul Dergarabedian of Rentrak said.
But if you want to read it on another level, the line could mean: This new “Star Wars” franchise, spearheaded by Disney and kicking off with “The Force Awakens”, will right the sins of the (to many fans, disgraceful) prequels that George Lucas made previously. The Will Ferrell/Mark Wahlberg comedy Daddy’s Home pulled in $38.8 million over the weekend, which was good enough to net it second place. The Force Awakens hasn’t even opened in China yet where it’s all but certain to top the box office, adding further fuel to its global domination.
In third with $17.5 million was another premiere, “Joy”, starring Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper.
The film took $153.5m (£103.5m) in the USA in its second weekend, bringing its total domestic haul to $544.6m (£367m).

But “Point Break”, a remake of the 1991 Kathryn Bigelow cult favorite, wiped out. With the continual record-breaking run of “Star Wars” and the surprising performance of many of this week’s additions, such a feat is well within reach. It takes #7 on the strength of its $10.5 million in weekend receipts.
