Last weekend, the seventh “Star Wars” sequel took in a record $149 million and topped the Will Ferrell-Mark Wahlberg comedy by about $110 million.
Those four films, and “Minions”, all topped $1 billion in ticket sales, the first time that has happened in a single year. The film brought-in an additional $11.8M this weekend, screening across 3,474 locations.
“The Force Awakens is picking off records one at a time as it explodes up the box office chart”, says Paul Dergarabedian, senior analyst for Rentrak. The Will Ferrell/Mark Wahlberg comedy “Daddy’s Home” completed within the silver for a 2nd straight week with an estimated $29 million, still it has quietly done wonderful business at the box workplace. The revisionist western from Quentin Tarantino racked up $16.2 million to finish in third place. Tarantino had complained loudly prior to both movies release when Arclight Cinemas chose to play “Star Wars” rather “The Hateful Eight”.
Lucas also insisted Bob Iger and the executives at Disney are doing “an incredible job of taking care of and expanding the franchise”. The Will Ferrell/Mark Whalberg film earned an estimated $29 million from 3,342 screens, bringing its ten-day total to a great $93.6 million. The film has made $61.7 million in three weeks of release, putting it ahead of Fey and Poehler’s previous teaming on “Baby Mama“, which made $60.5 million during its run in 2008.
Closing-out the top-five this weekend was the animated-comedy from FOX called “Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip”.
