‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ becomes fastest movie to $1 billion
The movie held off four new releases to keep the top spot at the box office.

Disney paid approximately $4 billion to acquire Lucas’s Lucasfilms in 2012, adding both the “Star Wars” and “Indiana Jones” franchises to its roster. The property has already given a boost to Disney’s consumer products, TV and theme-park divisions.
“This would have been a respectable opening weekend for ‘Star Wars, ‘” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for Rentrak. “Repeat viewings are having a snowball effect”.
As Rolling Stone reports, The Force Awakens ploughed past the billion dollar mark faster than previous record holders Jurassic World (13 days) and Avatar (19 days). The movie opened in US theaters on December 18, 2015. It also topped $100 million in IMAX screenings in 10 days, another global record.
“It was bigger than a movie”, said Dave Hollis, Disney’s distribution chief. “It’s bigger than we thought it would be”.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens will not be released in China until early 2016.

The comedy features Will Ferrell as a kind-hearted radio executive who must contend with his wife’s ex-husband, played by Mark Wahlberg. As of end of business on Friday, Star Wars was $140 million ahead of The Avengers and $115 million ahead of Jurassic World, and that spread was set to increase as the weekend continued. Fox co-financed the movie, about the inventor of the Miracle Mop, with Annapurna Pictures.

Audiences, which were primarily white (67 percent), female (66 percent) and over the age of 25 (77 percent), gave the film a B-plus grade (similar to “American Hustle“, which went on to be nominated for 10 Oscars). Of course, it’s still unlikely to be a money maker for Fox as it is now at $39.4 million domestically and $47.5 million worldwide with a prohibitive budget of $90 million. Meeting expectations, the remake of the 1991 Patrick Swayze-Keanu Reeves action-sports thriller pulled in an estimated $10.2 million, an eighth-place finish.
