Like the throats of Darth Vader’s commanding officers, box office records have been crushed by Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens is doing historic business in many parts of the world.
Daisy Ridley’s breakout role in “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” thrust her into the spotlight. It pulled in $120.5 million through Friday, its first full day in domestic theaters, the highest single-day ticket sales ever. Star Wars has smashed that to bits, with a take of $238m in just one weekend.
The movie was a global phenomenon, attracting record audiences in markets such as Australia, Britain, Germany and Russian Federation, according to Rentrak. It is the seventh in the “Star Wars” saga, and the first film starring beloved characters like Harrison Ford’s Han Solo and Carrie Fisher’s Princess Leia since 1983’s “Return of the Jedi”.
“Force Awakens” became the biggest domestic opening in North America, as well as the biggest December opening both in North America and globally.
“It kind of ruined our night, but it’s better to tell these fun stories than the sad ones you hear about”, Michael Melendez told CBS2. Disney bought producer Lucasfilm for $US4 billion in 2012. The film with its inter-galactic battles and space-hopping adventures played particularly well in premium formats – 3D was 47% of tickets sales, Imax accounted for 12%, and premium large formats were responsible for 7%.

“Force Awakens” toys, clothing, home accessorie sand video games are already selling well in the run up to Christmas. The current record holder is “Avatar”, which generated $2.8 billion worldwide after its December 2009 release. On Saturday alone, the film took £8.6m, the biggest business done on a Saturday for a movie ever in the UK.
