It beats the previous record held by Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows: Part 2 in 2011.
WHO’S LAUGHING NOW? Star Wars creator George Lucas, left, turned out his baby to the franchise’s new director, J.J. Abrams, and the results have been record-breaking.
It collected $US120.5 million on Friday, its first full day in domestic cinemas, the highest single-day ticket sales ever.
“The Force Awakens” scored the biggest opening weekend in key markets including Britain ($48.9 million, four-day), Germany ($27.3 million), Australia ($18.9 million) and Russian Federation ($12.3 million). Global sales reached $72.7 million through Thursday, Disney said. Those folks now appear to be correct as updated Saturday forecasts from outlets like Deadline have the movie tracking for a 0 million opening weekend. However, the numbers for The Force Awakens may not all be in yet, and it wouldn’t be hard for the movie to get pushed over that record by the time the weekend is over. People outside of the USA may simply prefer dinosaurs to spaceships, but part of the disparity can be attributed to the delayed launch of the movie in China, removing the potential for a solid financial contribution from moviegoers in the growing market.
“The Force Awakens” started its United States box office run in record-setting fashion with $57 million in Thursday night previews – 31% above the $43.5 million in previews for the final Harry Potter film. “It’s great to see that all fans can enjoy the Star Wars experience, as our theater partners continue to add new screens and new showtimes every day”. The Deathly Hallows had revenue of $91 million in its first day.
Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Adam Driver and Oscar Isaac star as new key players in the space opera, with Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher reprising their iconic roles.
“The Force Awakens” garnered a solid “A” CinemaScore and a near flawless 95% score on RottenTomatoes.com.
