‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ Breaks Box Office Records

Rentrak’s Paul Dergarabedian, one of Hollywood’s best-known box office analysts, said the film’s opening night performance in the USA and Canada “portends a massive and potentially record-breaking opening day and weekend for the film”. That’s a new record, too: “Jurassic World” made $525 million globally when it opened.

Reviews turned out to be stellar (95 per cent on Rotten Tomatoes), as did early audience reaction, which gave the film an A CinemaScore. “The movie was spoiled and everyone in the theater went insane”, an audience member said.

“Force Awakens” is the seventh installment in the epic science-fiction franchise created by George Lucas in 1977. “Force Awakens” was No. 1 in every country where it played except South Korea and Vietnam.

The film has not yet opened in China, home to the the second-largest movie customer base in the world.

“Force Awakens” also had the biggest Friday of all time, with $120.5 million.

The cast includes Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Adam Driver, Lupita Nyong’o and Domhnall Gleeson along with original “Star Wars” stars Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher.

The latest film returns to “a galaxy far, far away” some 30 years on from the action of 1983’s Return of the Jedi.
