But just how big were the numbers?
The latest instalment of the highly anticipated space epic raked in $57 million for its opening night Thursday, easily beating the previous record – $43.5 million – held by Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 in 2011. “About 63 percent of the audience was 26 or older”.
95% – The film’s score on review site RottenTomatoes.com.
The force was strong this weekend at the box office.
In every country that the film has now opened in, analysts say web traffic has dropped sharply as a result, and have theorised that fans are staying offline to avoid the possibility of plot spoilers for the new film.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens has crushed North American box office records with the biggest opening of all time.
$1.4 billion – 1977’s “Star Wars” U.S. total box office, adjusted for inflation.
“To all of the fans around the world who not only came out in Force to make this such an exciting and astronomical debut, but who treated this film as their own and helped preserve the experience for their fellow fans by not spoiling it – thank you, we do”.
32 – Number of years between “The Return of the Jedi” and “The Force Awakens”.
“We are obviously very encouraged by the record-breaking presales for Star Wars”, Dave Hollis, executive vice president of distribution at Walt Disney, said in statement released on Friday, as reported by USA Today.
