The department will not say how many officers fired their weapons or what the two people were doing before they were shot. Although McDonald had a knife during the shooting, he was deviating away from Van Dyke, who was about 20 to 25 feet away.

“The Force Awakens” now holds the box office records for biggest Thursday night opening, biggest one day gross, biggest December debut, and biggest opening weekend of all time. Disney bought Star Wars producer Lucasfilm for $4 billion in 2012 and spent more than $200 million to produce Force Awakens. The previous one-day high was $91.1 million set by “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2” in 2011. The film, the seventh installment of the Star Wars franchise created by George Lucas in 1977, surpassed the prior record for an opening weekend of $208 million set in June by “Jurassic World”.

Overall, “The Force Awakens” has grossed some US$130 million dollars worldwide since it opened overseas on Wednesday, setting records in Britain, Germany, Norway and Sweden.

“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” has scored the biggest four-day opening weekend of all time in the United Kingdom and Ireland.

As far as all-time box office sales, two films by James Cameron hold the record – “Avatar” ($2.78 billion) and “Titanic” ($2.18).

“Considering how strong the slate was, how strong the slate is going forward – and how important the worldwide box office has been and continues to be – the movie sector is incredibly robust”, remarked Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at Rentrak, an entertainment research company. Star Wars: The Force Awakens can not be directly compared to Spectre, which smashed British box-office records earlier this year, because Sam Mendes’ latest Bond was released on a Monday, while Star Wars’ take is a Thursday-Sunday bow.

Star Wars does not share the same universal popularity as other films in certain key markets around the world, such as China. If it gains the largest second weekend record, it could become the first movie to reach $800 million.
