With Thursday night previews, the film grossed $57 million in the domestic market, another record that also beats Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2’s record of $43.5 million.
The box office has not seen a performance like this since Universal’s “Jurassic World” opened in June ($208.8 million) and, prior to that, 2012’s premiere of “Marvel’s The Avengers” from Disney ($207.4 million). It debuted in 12 countries on Wednesday and an additional 32 on Thursday.
Disney also boosted its Friday estimate from at least $100 million in the early afternoon to $120 million by the late afternoon to as much as $125 million by late evening.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens has shattered North American box office records by scoring the biggest opening of all time with a $238 million (£159 million) haul.
Globally, The Force Awakens has taken an estimated $US517 million ($A720 million), according to boxofficemojo.
Two million tickets were booked in advance for The Force Awakens setting a new record for advanced ticket bookings in the United Kingdom and Ireland.
Caroline Ritter, 34, a truck driver, and firefighter Andrew Porters, 29, were among about 100 die-hard fans who camped outside Hollywood’s Chinese Theatre since December 5 for the opening of The Force Awakens. Instead, the reception is overwhelmingly positive for Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
While the ticket sales of the next day are still to be added into the numbers.
Actors John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, Max von Sydow, Lupita Nyong’o and Gwendoline Christie will join the original stars of the saga, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew, and Kenny Baker in the new film. The only question is, are the Star Wars movies on Netflix to stream in the comfort of your own home?
That puts it within striking distance of the global opening weekend record of $316.1 million and the record for a worldwide – that is foreign and domestic grosses combined – opening weekend of $524.9 million within range.
