Star Wars: The Force Awakens breaks record for Canada’s biggest opening weekend
“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” may rake in $528 million in worldwide ticket sales over the weekend, Walt Disney Co Chief Executive Bob Iger said on Bloomberg TV.

The film hit $250 million in worldwide ticket sales in only three days after beginning its rollout overseas on Wednesday, thus becoming the fastest movie to cross $200 million globally.
During that opening weekend, “Jurassic World” earned some million at the Chinese box office.
J.J. Abrams, left, and George Lucas pose for photographers upon arrival at the European premiere of the film ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens ‘ in London. Whilst that figure is slightly behind Jurassic World’s $524m, it’s expected that once the final numbers have been calculated, Star Wars will have nabbed that record too.
Rounding out the eight most-popular movies this weekend, in the US and Canada and as estimated by the studios and Rentrak, were “Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 2” ($5.7 million), “Creed” ($5 million), “The Good Dinosaur” ($4.2 million), “Krampus” ($3.8 million) and “In The Heart Of The Sea” ($3.5 million). The release of the first Star Wars movie under the Disney banner has alleviated those doubts. By last Friday, global ticket sales had reached US$129.5 million as the movie set opening-day records in Britain, Germany, Australia, Brazil and other countries.
That “Star Wars” was poised to shatter box office records was evident from the lines of moviegoers that formed in October when tickets went on advance sale.

The movie has opened in all markets except Greece and India, where it starts playing on Christmas Eve, and China, which has set a Jan 9 debut. This weekend’s monster opening gives Force Awakens records for biggest Thursday night opening, biggest single-day gross, biggest December opening, and of course, biggest opening weekend.
