“Jurassic World”, an unexpected sensation in June, also holds the global weekend opening record with $524.9 million, a number “The Force Awakens” could well exceed.
“The Force Awakens” brought in a stunning $120.5 million on Friday, eclipsing the previous record held by “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2” by nearly $30 million.
“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” became the biggest opening in movie history bringing in an estimated $238 million in the USA this weekend. Not enough? It also is the first-ever film to achieve $100 million in a single day.
“Star Trek: The Force Awakens” was predicted to clear $238 million in weekend domestic sales, passing the record set last summer by “Jurassic World”.
The Force Awakens has topped the US box office – I know that that will come as a shock to everyone… not!!!!
In such rarefied territory, Disney has been cautious about overestimating the box-office force of JJ Abrams’ seventh chapter in George Lucas’ space saga.
The movie has been breaking records just about everywhere and looks on course to easily cruise to $1 billion at the box office.
Among records shattered by the film were single-day sales, which had never before topped $100 million.
That includes a chart-topping $57 million from fans who flocked to see the first showings on Thursday night.
It also set a new high for highest theater average with $57,500 in 4,134 theaters, and posted an extra $279 million internationally (except for China, where it will open in January) for a $517 million global debut.
Elsewhere, The Force Awakens opened to $US279 million as it played in every major market except China, India and Greece.
